Tips for Interviewing Millennials — Free eBook

Last month, thousands of Millennials from around the country were celebrated as they graduated from college. Now that the graduation celebrations are over, it’s time for the recent college grads to enter the workforce.

Millennials are the 80 million young adults who were born between 1976 and 2001. Currently, they account for 26 percent of the U.S. workforce. By 2020, that number will rise significantly to 46 percent. This number will only continue to grow.

Learning how to effectively attract and retain top talent within the Millennial generation should be a top priority for businesses and HR departments.  This generation of job candidates and workers will help transform organizations and drive us into the future of business.

But before they can become rising leaders in your company, they have to successfully complete the interview process. And the burden is on HR and hiring managers to adapt to the changing needs, preferences and workstyles of the next generation of talent.

Here are a few tips to follow when interviewing a Millennial for a position at your company:

  • Share insights into your business

Millennials often make decisions on where they would like to work based on the company’s culture, benefits and social responsibility practices. Instead of just asking the candidate questions, make sure to also share insights into these three very important categories.

  • Go virtual

Millennials are constantly immersed in technology so why not use the tools they feel comfortable with? Video interviewing tools are more affordable, convenient and also help you identify the prospect’s viability sooner.

  • Ask unique questions

Millennials have new views on work schedules, technology usage and managerial styles. You should ask unique questions that will help you better understand what they expect from a company. Potential questions include:

  • What is your ideal work day?
  • What type of technology do you need to be successful?
  • What management styles do you prefer?
  • How have you used social media for work?
