Why You Should Switch to Video Interviews

If you’re looking for a new team member to join your company, it’s worth taking the time to speak to many different candidates. Interviewing applicants remotely using video conferencing technology allows you to open the field to top-notch candidates who may be qualified but live outside your immediate geographic area. This allows both your team and the new candidate an opportunity to get a good feel for each other without obligating the person to come to your office at their expense (or the company’s).

BrandGlue, a social media strategy and creative agency, began experimenting with video interviewing over 8 years ago as it searched for job candidates in locations across the country – from Seattle, Washington to Knoxville, Tennessee.

With BrandGlue being a fully remote team, on average, each hire has gone through 6-8 video interviews before receiving an offer.

Based on our conversation with Michelle, below are some video interview benefits to consider when evaluating your hiring process.

Pick Up on Nonverbal Cues

With technology quickly evolving, we now have more communication options than ever. Video interviews provide a better sense of the prospective hire. By using video, you can see the person and pick up on nonverbal cues, such as eye contact, facial expressions and gestures, giving you a more complete understanding of their personality and character.

“Video interviews allow you to assess a candidate’s personality, as well as get a window into their remote office setup. Consider asking candidates to take interviews from their home office and assess how comfortable they appear to be on video. Ask questions about how much they’ve worked from home, what their ideal remote team would look like, what is their preferred methods of remote communication and collaboration, etc. All of these questions will give you a better sense of the candidate,” says Michelle.

TIP: If you are a company that supports global teams and remote working, a group video interview is also a great way for a candidate to see how work is conducted regularly at your company.

Video Interviews Cut Costs and Time

Scheduling video interviews rather than an in-person interview can save time and money, especially in first-round job interviews.

According to the Wall Street Journal article, Video Job Interviews: Hiring for the Selfie Age, “Video interviews have significantly reduced travel costs for Cigna recruiters. Frank Abate, a senior recruiter there, said one of his colleagues racked up more than $1 million annually just traveling to meet candidates. Since adopting video interviews four years ago, that colleague’s expenses are now under $100,000.”

Michelle adds, “We have saved tens of thousands of dollars by doing our interviews remotely via video and haven’t seen any major reasons or value adds to going to in-person interviews, especially given that our entire team is remote.”

TIP: Video conferencing software is much less expensive than a flight, transportation and hotel costs – is it also less disruptive. Candidates will appreciate the convenience of video interviews and your company will appreciate the favorable impact on the bottom line.

Assess Comfort with Technology

Video interviews enable you to gauge a job candidate’s understanding and comfort with technology in an indirect way.

For example, are they comfortable and adaptable when it comes to unexpected challenges with video or audio? Can they manage distractions well?
